A series of photographs created for a photography module at university.
Depression is complicated and affects different people in different ways. For myself, characteristics include low mood, loneliness, internal emptiness, want for safety and feeling like I stand out as different. To encapsulate this, I photographed the model outside in empty streets at night to show the loneliness and emptiness. She is holding an umbrella, an object of protection. However, this containing a blue LED (connoting low mood) and positioning her as contrasting the orange lights around her. This implies that, despite her want for this saftey, she is still feeling like she has negative attention.
For these photos, the camera was set to priorite shutter speed, keeping it at 1/10th of a second. This ensure time to capture low light environments, while being fast enough to not blur the model. A tripod was used to allow for this speed. The ISO was also set low, around 100 to 200, to ensure a high quality image, whilst also meaning the dark areas are kept dark, and not ruined by noise. The aperture was automatically set low (arround 4.0 to 5.6) to counteract this, allowing for more light to enter the lens.
